is it time to come out of your shell?
You've heard of quiet quitting, but how about silent thriving?
Success should be something to celebrate - projects completed, exams passed, awards received or promotions won - celebrating success motivates us to set the next goal and to continue to work hard.
It's challenging then, if we're cut down or admonished every time we share our successes or express our goals and amibitions. Over time this can lead us to stay silent instead, carrying on with our work and doing a great job, without seeking approval or promotion.
The Tallest Poppy study in its 2023 report found that 77% of respondents had had their achievements downplayed in the workplace, while more than 70% had been undermined because of their achievements. Almost 70% said that their achievements had been dismissed, or worse, someone else had taken credit for them.
When smart and ambitious people find themselves in an environment where they are penalised for their achievements, this increases their stress and damages their work effectiveness. They will be less committed to the organisation and 70% of them will either leave or be seeking to leave. This is damaging both to the individual and to the organisation.
Staying small is a survival instinct - like a snail retreating into its shell. When we do it in the workplace, though, it can limit our opportunities and lead us to feel the resentment of not fulfilling our potential.
